On the dike outside Holwerd the foundation for two sculptures is being worked on. It is possible that they will be there at the beginning of 2019.
With the work, eight piles that will be driven into the dike, a start has finally been made with Sense of Place, which consists of a series of artistic dike projects that are high on the wish list of the Cultural Capital.
These include Dijk van een wijf (a female shaped dike of Nienke Brokke near Holwerd), an outer dike walking route/dobbe near Hallum, Camera Batavia (a mirror barrel near Ternaard by Arjen Boerstra), a Terp of the future near Blije, an installation by Marc van Vliet near the old pier of Blije, a salt marsh by Bruno Doedens near Striep on Terschelling and a curved pier by Ruud Reutelingsperger near Wierum.

Although at the beginning of this year there was still hope that a number of the Sense of Place works would be completed in the course of 2018, the permit applications were much slower than Joop Mulder and other initiators had hoped.
It is planned that we will start building in 2019”, says Arjen Boerstra, for whose Camera-Bataviaproject the dike at Ternaard needs to be raised somewhat. Sense of Place has thus become a long-term project.
In two smaller installations, however, the mudflats were brought to the city this summer, where a mudflat panorama was built in the former Aegon building and Bruno Doedens set up a mudflat cellar with sand and marram grass in the basement of the former Frisian Museum.
Holwerd has two large statues of Jan Ketelaar from Drachten, whom he calls Waiting for high water. At first the thickest of the two women is depicted, he says. `Se hie in namme ha moatten, ik he der wol oer neitocht, mar ik wyt der net ien. Se stiet foar in miljard minsken.’

When the sculpture will be there is still unclear, says Wendy Gooren, spokesman for Sense of Place. It might be possible at the beginning of December, but an objection procedure has yet to be completed. Otherwise, both will arrive in the spring.
